SPECIAL PROJECTS

Hermiston Public Library Renovation

Project Information

The Hermiston Public Library will undergo a major renovation beginning in August 2024, with a targeted completion date in Summer 2025. The purpose of the project is to:

• Improve safety & accessibility
• Create a dedicated teen & children’s space
• Develop new study rooms & maker space
• Add natural light through more and larger windows

During the renovation, book and media lending will be limited to high demand items at the Carnegie Building next door, and library programming will be held at City Hall. The library will accept returns at the current location throughout construction. Some resources will not be available during the renovation, but requests through regional libraries will begin as soon as possible.

History

The current Hermiston Public Library was completed in 1986. In the past 38 years, our community has experienced considerable growth. The renovation will connect the two floors, create a children’s area on the lower floor, and add new windows to bring in more light.

Funding

The renovation of the Hermiston Public Library is capital work funded through Enterprise Zone funds committed by both the City of Hermiston and Umatilla County. These funds are generated by Lamb Weston and Amazon projects currently underway. To further enhance the space, grants are being pursued to develop art inside the library.
