Well No. 5 Water System Improvements

DESCRIPTION

PROJECT ID: W 30.0
ESTIMATED COST: $520,000
ACTUAL COST: $1,032,867.68*
  • Installs a new deep well pump
  • Replaces three booster pump motors
  • Improves electrical components and controls, including variable frequency drives

* Cost increase came from adding approximately 1,000 feet of new pipe from Well #5 to the north at the intersection of Geer & Theater, adding efficiency as work was already taking place nearby.  This additional main increases redundancy and capacity to serve areas north of Theater Lane. Additionally, significant inflation occurred between preliminary design and when bids were received.

WHY IT’S NEEDED

Well No. 5 has become the city’s primary water source in recent years and provides water to the main pressure zone, which is the baseline for the entire water system. However, the current pumping capacity is less than the water right associated with it. The project will increase pumping capacity to allow the city to use its full water right of 5,000 gallons per minute.
